Women Create Life

Art for health campaign raising awareness about women's health

Women Create Life (WCL) merges art, design and consumer markets to generate global awareness and resources for women's and children's health. It builds on the power of artistic creativity, the call for innovative financing for health and recognition that global development hinges upon the health of women and their children.

ENVISION: Why it matters

Every minute in the poorest countries of the world a woman dies due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth. These tragedies are largely preventable and solutions exist. The United Nation Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have made these issues a priority through a Global Strategy for Women and Children Health but the progress has not been fast enough.

CONNECT: Our role

GD worked with the World Health Organization to create WCL and helped introduce the campaign and WCL products to the markets. GD expanded WCL’s range of products by engaging various business partners and strengthened reach of its messages, while supporting continuous improvement of WCL’s strategy and business plan.

TRANSFORM: How it works

WCL engages consumers to be part of the solution.

It commissioned artist Elisabetta Farina to produce a series of over 60 portraits of women from around the world that not only share women's power to give birth, but inspire how women create and nurture the conditions for life around the world. WCL partnered with a range of brand-name designers and companies, such as Moleskine, to integrate the WCL logo and commissioned images for a range of products.

After a campaign launch in 2007, a 2008 Christie's auction in Rome kicked off the campaign, and continued in partnership with various companies. A percentage of every sale of WCL products is invested in maternal and child health programs around the world.
